Hiring for AI governance is outrunning the ability to do it.

AI-governance titles grew 17% last year while the programs behind them barely moved. Read it whether you hold the title or sell to it.

A June study put a number on something people already felt. AI-governance roles grew 17% in a year. The programs those roles are supposed to run, the model audits and bias testing and real oversight, stayed about where they were. Hiring is running ahead of capability.

So there is a person out there with a new AI-governance title, a mandate, a board watching, and very little underneath them.

If you just took the job.

You were hired to have answers that mostly do not exist yet. Spend your first ninety days on the program you can defend and the paperwork that shows it is real, and lean on vendors who hand you a working function instead of a login. The goal is to be credible the first time the board asks something hard.

If you sell to that person.

The reflex is to open with a demo. Hold it. Open with the thing they lack: a defensible program and the evidence behind it. Give them material that survives being forwarded upward with no edits, and speak to the fear of a board question they cannot answer.

The week a company creates this role is the week it is about to learn it has nothing behind it.

Watch the job postings. For the person taking the seat, they mark the start of a scramble. For the vendor, they mark the moment the right help becomes hard to do without. Both are reading the same signal.
